I read your most recent article on the Larz Anderson ice skating rink with great exasperation. This can has been kicked down the road for far too long. Thousands of dollars have already been spent on a feasibility study. Why are we throwing money at another? Why are we even considering the vastly more expensive indoor/outdoor option? Brookline is struggling with structural budget shortfalls. The override passed last year to address this financial dilemma is only a short term solution. Why is Brookline pursuing projects that it simply can not afford? Your article mentions that without a skating rink that can accommodate Youth Hockey, 400 students will be negatively impacted. Our limited resources should be spent on expanding our laudable and hard-won efforts to make all recreation programs equitable. We have thousands of children to consider. Let’s invest in programs that invite wide participation. It is time to stop throwing money at studies for projects that Brookline simply can not afford, and to make a fiscally responsible decision on the fate of skating at Larz.
