It is far from unusual for towns to weigh in on matters of international importance. Not an insignificant number of communities raised their voices via local referenda in opposition to apartheid in South Africa. Let’s be clear. The opposition to our town speaking out for a ceasefire in Gaza is not merely because people just want our representatives to focus on local issues. That just rationalizes a more complicated truth: that many otherwise outspoken citizens are conflicted about their views on the war. Yet while there are many “I Stand With Israel” signs throughout our community, there are few, if any, signs decrying the killing of Palestinian children or even, more simply, demanding a ceasefire. Perhaps silence has become the best option for those opposed to the war. Understandable maybe, but troubling nonetheless.
