Brookline Veterinary Center in Washington Square closed abruptly on Tuesday August 1, leaving patients scrambling to find new veterinarians. A sign posted on the front door of the building cited “staffing and facility size constraints” as the reasons for closing.

The sign also says that patients will be given two options for continued care at Massachusetts Animal Medical Center in Watertown or Neponset Animal Hospital in Dorchester.

“The same quality staff will be available as well as some new faces,” the sign says.

Several clients of the clinic who posted on a local Facebook group said they were notified by email on August 1 that the clinic would be closing immediately.

The clinic’s website was still live as of August 15 and had not been updated with information regarding the closure. Phone lines at the business were disconnected.

Brookline Veterinary Center is part of Callanan Veterinary Group run by Dr. Jon Callanan, and has six locations throughout the Boston area and Rhode Island.

Callanan Veterinary Group did not respond to several requests for comment.

Paul Mataras, CEO of Boston Veterinary Clinic, which has a location in Coolidge Corner, said there was no word of a possible closure prior to August 1 and that there has been an increase in new client calls at his clinic since the closure.

Mataras said he was grateful that Brookline Veterinary Center referred patients to Boston Veterinary Clinic once they announced their closure and that they always welcome new patients, but called it “unusual” for a veterinary clinic to close so abruptly.

Mataras said they have not received any new staff applications since the closure of Brookline Veterinary Center.

Brookline has seen an increase in veterinary clinics in the last year, with the relocation of Boston Veterinary Clinic to Coolidge Corner last September and the opening of Small Door Veterinary on Harvard Street in May.
